Spirit Baby or Ancestor Returned?

There’s a topic that’s felt sticky to touch on for a while, but recent events tell me its finally time to get into it: Spirit Babies.

Some time ago, I was asked on Threads for my two cents on “spirit babies” and this is what I had to say at the time:

I haven’t ever seen a spirit baby medium for myself, but I’ve had a few clients who say readins were what kept them going during fertility struggles.

In my [spirit doula] sessions, “spirit babies” often come though, but offering a specific spirit baby reading still doesn’t feel right to me. The promise of connecting with that spirit feels too emotionally delicate and specific. When it comes to spiritual support for the birthing journey, the “spirit baby” may not be the most relevant spirit to communicate with for what the client needs at that time.

I also don’t think contact with spirit babies implies a guarantee or commitment to a baby. When I chose abortion in 2021, I was deeply connected to the spirit of that pregnancy and it was their love their helped me make the best choice for my living family. Spiritual contracts are negotiated in conception and pregnancy. We have choices.

We also live in a toxic, eugenicist society with hormone disruptors all around. Miracles happen, but spirit still has to move through matter to create a living baby.

I don’t doubt some people are especially great at spirit baby communication, but to me the journey of birthing encompasses so much more that there’s just something slightly suspicious to me about focusing exclusively on spirit babies. Similar to the fertility industry, great work done but very easy to be predatory on a vulnerable group.

Now since this response in January of 2024, I have grown a lot in my own spirit mediumship thanks to the education and community of Kaitlyn Graña and practice with my clients and church of Soft Power. And the joke is on me with that last paragraph, because the loudest group of spirits coming through for my clients in this season is, you guessed it, Spirit Babies.

How did I go from skeptic to spirit baby medium myself?

By investigating my suspicions! More often than not, when I get a little judgey about something, what I really need is to lean in to the opportunity to get curious.

What I’ve discovered is that the reason the term spirit babies has felt off to me is because these spirits don’t present to me as babies at all! In fact, they come to me as ancestors lined up to return to Earth with the work their soul wants to do with a family that can support their journey.

And the type of ancestors that are coming to my clients lately are powerful, passionate, and fiercely committed to the future of not just their bloodlines, but the future of our planet.

Some recent examples of spirit baby messages

For one pregnant client, her baby wanted her to know that they specifically chose this family for their radical values and courage to embody them amidst adversity. Because this was her second baby, my client was concerned that she didn’t feel as connected as her first pregnancy, but this spirit shared with us that he didn’t want to make trouble and was just happy to be part of a loving home.

Another client came to me expressing excitement that her spirit baby was communicating with her, paired with confusion because she is not partnered and motherhood feels potentially years away. Her spirit baby came forward to affirm that the messages she’s been getting on her own were real and that she wants to guide her toward not only her partner, but the village they will be raised in, too.

“Is it selfish to have a baby during the end of the world?”

I hear this sentiment often and first I have to say: this is not the end of THE world — its the end of A world. A world under the grips of a small population of oppressive, unfortunately influential fascists. The era of patriarchal dominance is dying and as it flails to survive, it digs itself deeper into destruction. Energies of abundance, creativity, interdependence, and sovereignty are rising to rebalance and there are spirits that wish to come to Earth and participate in this incoming paradigm.

To have children right now is a revolutionary act of commitment to the future of the world. To parent is a devotion to nurturing the leaders of the future and if you feel deep down that parenting is part of your path, I hope you follow that voice.

I can’t say for sure if the path is for you, but I do notice that the people asking this question are often the people with lives and values very much worth sharing and passing on. The spirits know it too, that’s why they’re lined up to join us.

I also know that our inner voices can get confused with other voices that don’t belong to us — ones that pressure to have children for reasons outside of our own desires. And even if a spirit baby is banging down your door, your consent always comes first and you get to decide for yourself if that’s what you want in this lifetime.

The only way to know for sure is by going within yourself and connecting to your voice and spirits. My role as a spirit doula is to be a companion in that process reflecting back to you and your sovereign choice for those who need the help.
